About the Speaker

Alan Newman has been Executive Director of the Imaging Department of The Art Institute of Chicago since 1985. He plans, directs and evaluates digital imaging and multimedia applications and publications (see for example). Mr. Newman heads a department of 20 photographers, archivists, image rights coordinators, computer graphics and audio-visual specialists. He leads a number of new technology initiatives.

His projects have won a first prize for Artist Biography (video) and two consecutive first prize CD-ROMs for children, awarded by the American Association of Museums. Mr. Newman is the co-director of an enterprise-wide project to create a Knowledgebase for the AIC and extend its collection management system with images, video, audio, 3-D, manuscripts and other rich media.

Mr. Newman serves on the Illinois Century Network's (ICN) Statewide Advanced Engineering Taskforce (AET). The AET makes policy recommendations for the ICN, a high-speed network connecting all of the schools, museums, libraries and universities in Illinois.


The Art Museum Image Consortium (AMICO) is a not-for-profit organization of institutions with collections of art, collaborating to enable educational use of museum multimedia. Together, AMICO Members are building The AMICO Library™, a licensed digital educational resource available under subscription to universities and colleges, public libraries, elementary and secondary schools, and museums. Membership in AMICO is open to all institutions with collections of works of art, willing to contribute to The AMICO Library. AMICO's Research and Editorial offices are hosted by the University of Toronto Libraries.
